Larne Town Centre Public Realm Scheme

Our vision for Larne is a town centre which provides high quality environments and spaces to live, shop, meet and work, creating experiences which encourage people to come back more often, to stay longer and contribute more to its economic sustainability.

With a combined investment of over £530,000 from the Department for Communities and over £59,000 from Council, works will commence on Monday 16 January 2023 on Point Street (between Broadway and the junction with Narrow Gauge Road) to upgrade the footways with granite paving, re-surfacing of the road and new street lighting to match the existing high quality public realm scheme within the town centre.

The work is being carried out by the Department for Infrastructure as part of the Larne Town Centre Investment Plan and Town Centre Strategy, launched by Council in March 2022.

Businesses on Point Street and Broadway will be open as normal throughout the works.

In order to complete the works as quickly and safely as possible, Point Street will initially be closed to vehicular traffic from Monday 16 January 2023 for 9 weeks with pedestrian access to businesses maintained.

Signs will be placed to advise motorists of any restrictions or diversions which will be updated regularly.

The new lighting columns have been installed, which will be connected once the necessary cabling has been completed. Work is continuing on service alterations before the new footpaths can be installed.

Please note there is currently a road closure in place for Broadway and Point Street which is closed to traffic for another 5 weeks (Monday to Saturday, 8.30am - 6pm). Diversions are in place during this time and pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the works.  Parking on the works site is not permitted and only emergency vehicles will be granted access during the road closure times.

13 March 2023

Both NIE Networks and NI Water have been upgrading their infrastructure on the street.

NIE Networks work in particular has proved to be extensive and has necessitated an extension to the existing road closure in order to facilitate its completion.

A request to extend the duration of the existing road closure has subsequently been granted for an additional 3 weeks from 17 March through to 7 April 2023.
