Science Summer School Activities – 2023

Local manufacturing facilities have been receiving visits from schools, allowing students to gain insights into their operations and learn about their processes.
 

Ballymena Academy visit to Kilwaughter Minerals

Pupils from Ballymena Academy had the opportunity to learn about a local firm, Kilwaughter Minerals which produces high-quality products for the construction and agriculture sectors.

The tour was organised through the Manufacturing Task Force as part of the engagement activities of Science Summer School, a STEAM Initiative that will be returning to the borough for the second time in January 2024.

Council are committed to developing skills in the borough and exploring new initiatives with local employers to enable a seamless transfer from education into work.

During the visit, the students had the opportunity to learn more about what makes a major manufacturing company work. The tour of the manufacturing plant included an insight into product development, R&D, business development, quality assessment and quarrying. The pupils were also informed about the many opportunities available in the manufacturing sector, including engineering, research and development, sales, marketing, human resources, quality control and production.

Larne High School visit to Kilwaughter Minerals

Pupils from Larne High School have taken the opportunity to learn about local firm, Kilwaughter Minerals which produces high-quality products for the construction and agriculture sectors. Following on from a successful site visit last June, pupils from Year 13 were invited to the company recently to learn first-hand of the many career opportunities on their doorstep.

Carrickfergus Grammar visit to Yelo and Ryobi

Pupils from Carrickfergus Grammar recently took the opportunity to visit two major local employers, Yelo and Ryobi, in a dual visit aimed to inspire and provide career insights and opportunities with both companies. The organisations welcomed a group of Year 11 pupils to their sites on Meadowbank Road, #Carrickfergus, as part of the engagement activities of Science Summer School.
 

During the visit, the students had the opportunity to learn more about exporting on a global scale, and what makes a major manufacturing company work. Students were provided with behind the scenes tours of both organisations looking at business development, quality assessment, shipping & logistics and client management.

The pupils were also advised on the many opportunities available in the sectors, including engineering, concept and design, research and development, sales, marketing, human resources, quality control and production.

Whitehead PS - Immersive Story-Telling Event
