Bike Week 2018 runs from the 9 to 17 June 2018 and as usual, Mid and East Antrim Borough Council is planning a number of family events to encourage participation in cycling.

All events are FREE but you must register to attend with the form below.

Sunday 10 June 2018

Street Velodrome

Broughshane Street Car Park

11am to 6pm

Street Velodrome brings all the excitement and drama of Olympic style track pursuit racing with its innovative popup velodrome, complete with steep banked corners. Bikes, helmets and professional coaching is provided for all ages. There will also be a range of stallholders offering cycling information and cycle-related arts and crafts. Street Velodrome is a project supported by the European Union’s PEACE IV Programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body.

11am - Sports Clubs

Do you belong to a sports club, a gym or bike club? Then come along from 11am to compete in timed trials in our Sports Clubs session!

12.30 Kids Series, Sharks Vs Tigers!

During the Sharks v Tigers coaching session each rider receives excellent one to one help from our Pro Riders followed by a plenty of practice laps.  But who will you race for - THE SHARKS or THE TIGERS? 

All entrants to the Kids Series receive an exclusive StreetVelodrome Kids Series medal presented to them on the podium. Plus they all get to meet and be coached by the Pro Riders competing in the StreetVelodrome Pro-Series.

Kids Series racers will feel like a Pro Rider for the day. A truly inspiring and memorable experience.

12.30 NexGen Series

Love cycling? Aged 12 to 16? The NexGen Series is the competition for you.

Competing on identical bikes, coached by pro riders, racing for individual glory. The NexGen Series is the ideal platform to experience what its like to compete as a Pro rider.

Each NexGen Series competitor gets one to one coaching from a Pro Rider from the StreetVelodrome Pro-Series. After a few practice laps, they'll compete in a two-lap time trial, just like the pros. The top four riders qualify to race.

2pm6pm Open to all!

Come along and have a go at time trialled competition, whether you’re a veteran cyclist or haven’t been on a bike for years – everyone welcome!

All events are FREE but you must register to attend.

Please note that this is an open session, so come along at a time that suits you and join in the action.

Ballymena Showgrounds

6.30pm to 9.30pm

At Ballymena Showgrounds we have planned an evening of cycling activities for everyone, based on our 2G pitch.

Our activities include:

‘Bike Doctor’ station by Podium 4 Sport – providing diagnosis of maintenance issues along with limited adjustments for all bikes on the night.

Disability Cycling Station in partnership with Disability Sport NI – providing activities and specially adapted disability bikes and tandems for people with a disability to get involved.    

‘Sofa to Saddle’ SIGN UP STATION in partnership with Ballymena Road Cycling Club -  Are you not as active as you should be.  Fancy using cycling as the activity which gets you up and active?  Then our Sofa to Saddle programme is the perfect way to get you cycling kilometres in no time!  Weekly sessions will be delivered by trained cyclists from Ballymena Road Cycling Club.  Places are limited, so if this sounds like a programme that you are keen to get involved in, then make sure you register on the night for this programme.   

‘Bike Rodeo’ station – take part in our skills stations which will see just how good your cycling control and skill really are.  Everyone can take part in these sessions.

Family Bike Ride Route – Our bike friendly family cycle route will be open from 6.30pm-9.30pm the perimeter of the showgrounds facilities, creating a traffic-free and safe course for families to enjoy a good cycle together.

‘Bikeability Programme’ delivered by Sustrans – this 90 minute course will teach participants some of the important skills around cycle safety and control through fun games and challenges.  A great course for all ages, particularly those starting off on cycling!  This programme will start at 7pm and spaces are limited.

Participants must be able to ride independently without stabilisers. Participants must bring own bikes which must have tyres pumped and have 2 working brakes.

Larne town centre, meet at Broadway

7pm to 8pm

Our popular Town Centre Family Fun Cycle returns again!  The special traffic free route goes along Main Street, Lower Cross Street, Broadway and Point Street.  With music and light entertainment provided, Podium 4 Sport will also provide a ‘Bike Doctor’ station for maintenance advice and simple tweaks.  Participants are encouraged to park in side streets and not along the route, and assembly is at Broadway.  To register your interest, please complete our form by clicking the link below:

Following on from last years success, our popular Town Centre Family Fun Cycle returns again!  The traffic-free route goes along Antrim Street and North Street.  With music and light entertainment provided, Podium 4 Sport will also provide a ‘Bike Doctor’ station for maintenance advice and simple tweaks.  Participants are encouraged to use adjacent public car parks and not park along the cycle route.  Assembly is at High Streer.  To register your interest, please complete our form by clicking the link below:
