Mid-Antrim Museum’s Education Programme

School Visits

The museum offer a variety of interesting and stimulating education programmes based around our unique collections.  All sessions underpin the requirements of the Northern Ireland Curriculum and provide children with an intriguing glimpse into the past.  The children take place in hands-on workshops using artefacts from the museum’s collections, photographs, documents and exhibitions. 

  • Early Man and Materials KS2
    This session explores how Stone Age people lived interdependently with his environment, used the materials available to them and adapted over time.
  • Rationing and Raids KS1
    This session explores the local Home Front during the Second World War. 
  • Houses and Homes: Ballymena in the 1920’s and today KS1
    Using a variety of museum objects and photographs to explore what houses and homes were like in the past compared to today and how every day, domestic objects have changed over time.

Cost: £1.50 per pupil

The museum has a collection of curriculum linked handling boxes for hire to schools.  The boxes contain a mixture of artefacts, replicas and comes complete with an information pack, teacher resource material and activity sheets.

Online Museum Learning Resource: Decade of Centenaries

This microsite looks at the impact and legacy, at a local level, of the significant events that occurred in Ireland between the years 1912 to 1922.  Two projects New Perspectives exploring the period 1911 to 1914 and On The Brink exploring the period from 1914 to 1916 through the utilisation of the museum collections. 

This educational resource will be of interest to teachers, students and those interested in Irish and local history.  Further resources will be added as the project develops.  

Sharing Memories: Guided Reminiscence Session

The museum offers outreach reminiscence sessions facilitated by a member of staff.  We can cover a diverse range of subjects and can be tailored to your group’s need.

Guided Museum Tours

If you wish to immerse yourself in the fascinating and surprising history of the mid-Antrim area the museum offers guided tours to their state-of-the-art galleries.  The tour lasts one hour and prior booking is required.

Heritage Trails Booklets published by Mid-Antrim Museum

  • Ballymena Churchyard Trails: Exploring the heritage of rural churchyards
    The two trails covered by this publication highlight the significant heritage of selected ecclesiastical sites; one trail focuses on sites of pre-Reformation origin and the second trail on Covenanter sites.

    This trail provides a brief history of the wartime movement of the Gibraltarians and a look at their lives in the Ballymena area.
