Blackthorn Breads is a micro bakery that was established in 2012; its range of loaves is now available exclusively from Blackthorn and Willow in Glenarm each Saturday.
The loaves are baked on the premises – in the kitchen above the shop – and often arrive in the shop still warm. They are ready by midday; if you arrive a little too early don’t worry – there is plenty to look at in the shop, which sells a range of artisan foods and locally produced crafts, or you could have a cup of tea or coffee while you wait.
A selection of loaves are baked each week: white loaves enriched with olive oil topped with poppy seeds; focaccia with fresh herbs; mixed grain cobs; sourdough and a French-style country loaf (Pain de Campagne). In addition each week there is a ‘special’ depending on the time of year as seasonal fruit, herbs and vegetables are incorporated into the loaves, for example, Potato with Wild Garlic (in the spring); Sweet Lavender (in the summer), and Spicy Pumpkin loaves (in the autumn). Other ‘specials’ include Rosemary & Sultana Coburgs; Carrot & Oat Flowerpot Loaves and Pain d’Epi.
Blackthorn Breads are made from the finest of ingredients – a mixture of flours (mostly organic stoneground flour); fresh yeast, olive oil, and sea salt form the basic loaves. Blackthorn Breads is a member of the Real Bread Campaign and Real Bread Ireland.
