William Alexander Smith was born in isolated Thurso, near the northernmost part of the British Isles and 300 miles from Glasgow.

Yet it was in 1883, as a young Sunday School teacher in the Scottish city, that he established an organisation which would spread across the world and recruit tens of thousands into its ranks.

The Boy's Brigade was soon to spread across the British Isles, including into County Antrim. And among those who was a member in Larne was a young boy named Denis Whiteside who, when he emigrated to Canada, would be founder of a new BB Company there - the 25th Toronto.

What is the story of the Boy's Brigade and what role and resonance has it had over the years? In this talk we trace the roots and early years of the BB and examine a rich and varied history.

This is a free event, however, places are limited and must be booked in advance by contacting Larne Museum on T: 028 28 262443 or

Light refreshments will be provided.
