Giving Loneliness a Voice in Mid and East Antrim

Tuesday 9 June 2026

Loneliness Awareness Week in Mid and East Antrim will see a range of projects and events ‘Give Loneliness a Voice’, from 15 to 21 June 2026.

Loneliness Awareness Week brings people together and signposts support available

Mid and East Antrim Loneliness Network, the lead organisation in the Borough, supports this annual campaign created by loneliness charity Marmalade Trust. The aim is to encourage people to talk more openly about loneliness and reduce the stigma.

Formed through the outcomes of Mid and East Antrim’s Community Plan ‘Putting People First’, this local network showcases how community, voluntary and statutory organisations work together to prevent and address loneliness.

Planned activities across the Borough include a drop-in health and wellbeing fair in Carrickfergus Town Hall and community walks. In partnership with local libraries in Carrickfergus, Larne and Ballymena, there will also be photography for wellbeing sessions.

The opening of Good Morning Ballymena’s new office for friendly connections and support will coincide with this awareness week.

Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Alderman Thomas Gordon, said: “One in three people in Northern Ireland are likely to experience feelings of loneliness in their lifetime.

“I would encourage anyone feeling lonely to register with one or more of the events happening this week. From Chatty Walks to photography classes – there is something for everyone and making connections can mean the world to someone.”

Mid and East Antrim Loneliness Network Chairperson Marjorie Hawkins added: “There are over 10 events being organised locally to mark Loneliness Awareness Week, giving loneliness a voice.

“I can reassure people that if they are feeling isolated, they will get a big welcome if they come down to any of our activities to meet people and make connections.

“You never know what people are going through and a bit of laughter and conversation can lift everyone’s spirits. I really hope these events will encourage more people to reach out and take that first step.”

The planned events are funded by the Loneliness Network, formed in 2019, through the Northern Health and Social Care Trust (NHSCT).

Sabrina Lynn from NHSCT said: “It’s fantastic to see the range of activities happening in Mid and East Antrim during Loneliness Awareness Week.

“It is so encouraging how many local groups have got on board to encourage connection, talking and communicating with others.”
