Mid and East Antrim Borough Council continues major refuse fleet investment

Monday 18 May 2026

Mid and East Antrim Borough Council has announced another significant investment in its operational fleet with the purchase of ten new Refuse Collection Vehicles (RCVs).

Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor Jackson Minford, and Rowan Moore, Director of Place at Mid and East Antrim Borough Council, are pictured at Slemish alongside a few of the new vehicles joining the Council’s refuse collection fleet.

As part of the Council’s vehicle replacement scheme this order included three 16‑tonne units, for accessing rural areas, and seven 26‑tonne units. The scheme is designed to strengthen service delivery and support long-term operational resilience.

The upgraded fleet will support improved route coverage, reduced downtime and a more sustainable approach to waste management across the Borough.

Commenting on the investment, Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor Jackson Minford, said: “This investment ensures we can continue delivering a high standard of waste collection service to the public.

“The addition of these new RCVs strengthens our fleet, supports our staff, and reflects our pledge of continuous improvement to all homes in Mid and East Antrim.

“It is vitally important our fleet remains fit for purpose to deliver an efficient, reliable and sustainable service.

“The expansion of our RCV fleet gives us greater flexibility to respond effectively to future service demands as new homes are developed and the population in the Borough grows.”

Through the vehicle replacement programme, the Council has phased out ageing vehicles and introduced modern RCVs equipped with advanced safety technologies. These improvements are intended to reduce the risk of injuries and road traffic incidents, reflecting the Council’s obligations to protecting the health and safety of its employees and members of the public.

The new vehicles are being deployed across the Borough’s service areas and will be fully integrated by early summer.
