Mid and East Antrim women reflect on resilience and gender equality on International Women’s Day

Friday 6 March 2026

Women from across Mid and East Antrim gathered at a special International Women’s Day event hosted by the Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor Jackson Minford at the Ross Park Hotel, Ballymena.

The ‘fireside chat’ style networking event explored the relationship between resilience and gender equality.  Guests heard from an inspiring panel including Ballymena artist Carly Wright; Lady Mayoress Allison Minford; Stephanie Cathcart from NI Chest, Heart and Stroke; Muriel Barr, BEM from NI Children’s Hospice, and Jo-Anne Dobson, NI Charity Ambassador for Kidney Care UK.

Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor Jackson Minford, said: “I was honoured to bring together women from across the Borough to recognise International Women’s Day.  Through open and honest discussion, it became clear that the quiet strength women show – especially when the journey gets tough – plays a vital role in advancing equality.

“We heard humbling and thought-provoking accounts from our panel.  Their experiences demonstrated how overcoming trauma and hardship can shape confident, compassionate and effective leaders.  I am confident everyone in attendance left inspired, supported and empowered to take an active role in local decision-making.

“The Council remains committed to creating inclusive communities and promoting equality of opportunity.  We will continue to engage with and support women across the Borough as we work collectively towards a fairer and more resilient society.”

Reflections from the panel of speakers reinforced the values at the heart of International Women’s Day, celebrated globally on 8 March - dignity, loyalty, hope, justice and sisterhood.
