Sofa to Saddle Success

Wednesday 12 September 2018

A very happy group of cyclists hit Ballymena Road Club HQ to celebrate completing Mid and East Antrim Borough’s first ever Sofa to Saddle programme.

This programme was coordinated by Mid and East Antrim Borough Council through their PEACE IV project ‘Your Place Our Space’, an EU funded Programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body.

Sofa to saddle is a social cycling programme which has seen participants going from ‘Sofa’ to ‘40 Km’ in the space of 7 weeks. The group have been able to complete this fantastic achievement due to the expert guidance from Ballymena Road Club, who have coached and supported the programme every step of the way.

The Mayor, Cllr Lindsay Millar was in attendance to congratulate the participants and hand out the much-deserved certificates. Cllr Millar said: “I am delighted to see this programme running under PEACE IV funding which encourages local people from all sides of the community to get together and enjoy our wonderful borough. Sofa to saddle not only promotes cycling and fitness but also brings people together to achieve challenging goals, which they may not have the confidence to undertake on their own. The programme builds connections between participants and lays the foundations for safe and sustainable health, fitness and friendships – one of council’s key priorities in our community plan.”

Ballymena Road Club tutors delivered both practical and theoretical training throughout the 7 weeks, teaching the group how to ride safely on the road, how to maintain their bikes and the proper nutrition needed to undertake long and difficult rides.

In addition to the coaches from the club, a huge number of road club members turned up each week simply to show their support, which really demonstrates a commitment above and beyond expectations.

Match-funding for this project has been provided by the Executive Office in Northern Ireland and the Department for Rural and Community Development in Ireland.
