Eilish Degnan Children’s Foundation gets surprise visit from Mayor

Thursday 23 March 2023

Members of the Eilish Degnan Children’s Foundation at Kilroot in Carrickfergus got a lovely surprise last weekend when Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Alderman Noel Williams, dropped by to thank them for all their hard work and dedication supporting children with life limiting illnesses.

Mayor with founder and manager, Gerald Degnan.

The amazing Foundation raises vital funds to aid and help children suffering from all forms of life limiting illness and their families. To give them a brief respite from the daily burden of debilitating diseases with day trips, holidays or even a chance to meet with their heroes - bringing a little happiness into their lives.

The Mayor thanked founder and manager, Gerald Degnan, for the magnificent work he does on behalf of his late mother’s charity - for children who are treated in the Royal Victoria Children’s Hospital.

Speaking at the visit the Mayor said: “It’s been great to call in and see first-hand the fantastic work the Foundation undertakes to make life a little brighter for sick children.

“Gerald currently has an on-going appeal for Easter eggs for the children at the Royal.  The Mayoress and I wanted to help with the appeal by donating some eggs to the growing collection, and to congratulate him on the award of a BEM in recognition of his charitable endeavour.

“I was really impressed with the quality of charity goods that have been donated and are on display at the centre, so much so that we bought a few items for our own home.

“I would encourage everyone to support this excellent charity, and indeed any of our fine charities, whenever possible.”

The Mayor concluded: “As the Chair of a Northern Ireland charity - the RAF Association - I appreciate just how lonely it can be when on a charity campaign, and the gargantuan effort it requires to keep focused.  Gerald, wholly deserves his national honour of a BEM, and is a great example to us all.”
