History-makers among winners at Mid and East Antrim Sports Awards

Wednesday 11 March 2026

Impressive sporting successes and remarkable dedication have been celebrated on a big night for the Borough at the Mid and East Antrim Sports Awards, hosted by Claire McCollum.

Among the feats celebrated were a historic first and a world record. The 2026 Mid and East Antrim Sports Awards winners are:

  • Junior Sportsperson of the Year - Naomi McClelland (Athletics)
  • School Sporting Performance - St Killian’s U16 Camogie Team (Camogie)
  • Sportsperson/Team with a Disability - Juliane Keane (Athletics)
  • Manager/Coach of the Year - Paul Johnston (Hockey)
  • Community Participation - Belfast Lough Sailability (Sailing)
  • Team of the Year - Larne Ladies Hockey Club First XI (Hockey)
  • Services to Sport - Bertnel Thompson (Football)
  • Sportsperson of the Year - Josh Rock (Darts)

“It’s fantastic to be able to come together and celebrate everything that’s great about the wealth of sporting talent in our Borough,” Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor Jackson Minford, said.

“I hope the achievements of our winners, and all those shortlisted, can inspire and encourage the next generation. Hard work and dedication can support you in whatever sport you prefer.

“Congratulations to those who picked up well-deserved awards and our heartfelt thanks to all our sponsors who help make nights like these possible,” concluded Mayor Minford.

Communities Minister Gordon Lyons said: “Celebrating the remarkable achievements of our local sportspeople is vital, not only to recognise their dedication and success but to acknowledge the pride felt right across our communities. Each nominee here tonight should be extremely proud of all that they have achieved.

“Showcasing these accomplishments plays an important role in inspiring the next generation of athletes, helping young people see what is possible, encouraging them to get involved and strive for their own goals, a core ambition of the ‘Active Living’ Strategy.

“Congratulations to all this year’s winners and to everyone who was nominated. Being shortlisted alone is a fantastic achievement and a testament to the commitment and passion you bring to your sport.”

Top darts player Josh ‘Rocky’ Rock from Broughshane scored a ‘bullseye’ when he secured Sportsperson of the Year fresh from his exploits on the Premier League circuit.

The world number nine recently caused delight among home fans when a moment of brilliance saw him hit a nine-darter against Dutchman Gian van Veen at the SSE Arena, Belfast.

Hia award comes after a year that included highlights topped by winning the PDC World Cup of Darts for Northern Ireland – a historic first for the country – with partner Daryl Gurney.

Larne runner Juliane Keane took home the award for Sportsperson with a Disability after setting a new Guiness World Record (three hours, 53 minutes and two seconds) for the fastest marathon completed by a woman with multiple sclerosis (MS).

The impressive primary school teacher has lived with MS for two decades and never expected to be able to do a marathon. Incredibly, she completed the 2025 London Marathon in a record time making history in the process.

Meanwhile, the Services to Sport Award saw long-time Ballymena United kitman Bertnel Thompson recognised for his incredible commitment to the club.

The Ahoghill native, who now lives in Islandmagee, played an integral role with the Sky Blues for nearly 30 years after joining them back in 1996.

He only recently stepped down, at the age of 73, having served under eight managers.

During his time with the club, Bertnel saw them win the First Division title, the League Cup and two County Antrim Shields. He also travelled the world as kitman for the Northern Ireland Under-17s for 12 years.

Balon Sportswear awarded two £250 bursaries, which were secured by athlete Naomi McClelland and 12-year-old Irish Ice Hockey player Jamie Murray.

The Galgorm Resort in Ballymena was the venue for these awards sponsored by: The Pantry, Ryobi Aluminium, Pollock Lifts, Wilsons of Rathkenny, The Curran Court Hotel, McCadden, Sign Time and Stirling Trophies.
