New toilet and shower facilities at Browns Bay
Tuesday 12 May 2026
The construction of new enhanced toilet and shower facilities at the popular Browns Bay is due to be started in early June 2026 by Mid and East Antrim Borough Council.
It will include a specialised ‘Changing Places’ unit for those with additional needs, male and female toilets and new outdoor shower facilities for swimmers and users of this popular beach.
Brown’s Bay is a horse-shoe shaped bay found at the north of the Islandmagee peninsula, nestled between Skenaghan Point and Barrs Point. As a popular swimming spot, Browns Bay is also ideal for picnics and scenic walks, with a large car park and wheelchair accessible grass area.
Speaking ahead of the works beginning, Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor Jackson Minford, said: “Inclusion and accessibility are vitally important to Council and we are pleased to have secured planned works to provide new, improved, accessible facilities at Browns Bay.
“As an important asset in our Borough, Browns Bay provides safe bathing and breathtaking scenery for both residents and visitors alike. This investment is expected to encourage more residents and visitors to make use of the fantastic coastline in the years ahead.
“I am particularly pleased to see a dedicated Changing Places unit included in the plans for the facility – ensuring that all visitors to this wonderful site have their needs catered for.”
A section of the new building will also accommodate touring vehicles with the provision of a sluice facility for the disposal of chemical toilet waste.
During construction, the current temporary toilet facilities will remain in place until the new toilet block is completed.
Council anticipates the new toilet facilities will be operational before the end of 2026.
