Soapbox Science Comes to Ballymena!
Tuesday 2 June 2026
The first-ever ‘Soapbox Science’ event in Mid and East Antrim is set to inspire the next generation of female scientists and researchers.
Taking place on Friday 12 June from 11.00am to 2.00pm in the People’s Park, Ballymena, Soapbox Science is a free, drop-in event. It will see female researchers step onto their soapboxes, to share their groundbreaking science with members of the public in an engaging and accessible way.
Delivered in partnership between Mid and East Antrim Borough Council and Queen’s University Belfast, it aims to showcase the diversity of careers in science and encourage more females to consider opportunities in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).
Newly appointed Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Alderman Thomas Gordon, said: “Science is an interesting and beneficial field of study. Without dedicated individuals willing to test boundaries and theories, we would have a very different society. As a council, we are delighted to have the opportunity to help shape the future careers of local young people through our ‘Activate Your Curiosity’ programme.
“The addition of Soapbox Science is an ideal way to help inspire females in the Borough in a fun, engaging, and accessible way. I wish everyone a fantastic day and am sure the brain neurones of our local schoolchildren and residents will be well and truly activated.”
Soapbox Science is particularly suited to primary and post-primary pupils, a unique opportunity to experience real-world science outside the classroom. By bringing research directly into public spaces, the event seeks to spark curiosity, challenge stereotypes and encourage young people to explore STEM subjects.
The event forms part of Mid and East Antrim Borough Council’s ‘Activate Your Curiosity’ exciting STEM programme and is delivered by Queen’s University Belfast and leading academics.
