A Mountain of Craic: Climb Slemish this St Patrick’s Day!

Monday 2 March 2026

Pack your waterproofs and lace up your walking shoes ready to join the hundreds of visitors at Slemish Mountain this St Patrick’s Day (Tuesday 17 March) for the annual uphill trek.

Legend has it, Ireland’s patron saint, Saint Patrick, once tended sheep on Slemish.

The traditional St Patrick’s Day Climb of Slemish will provide a day full of history, fresh air and family-friendly fun in the heart of County Antrim.

Activities at the site are not just for the hillwalkers, there will be entertainment for the whole family with a petting farm, face painting and walkabout characters. For those that can still move their feet, there will be local traditional Irish music and Irish dancing in the marquee.

The one and a half kilometre walk at Slemish takes approximately one hour. It is strongly advised that appropriate warm, waterproof clothing and strong footwear are worn (boots are recommended - no soft trainers). Sections of the short climb can be steep and slippery and might not be suitable for all.

Those that do complete the climb will be able to collect their St Patrick’s Day Climbers certificate (subject to availability).

Access to Slemish will be by Park and Ride only. This will run from Silverwood/Michelin at Broughshane, just off the M2 from 9am until the last departure at 3.30pm.

No parking will be allowed anywhere near Slemish, and traffic patrols will enforce all no waiting zones.

Visitors should follow the yellow and black event signs on all approaches. Parking for blue badge holders will also be at the Silverwood/Michelin site.

Only service and assistance dogs are permitted at this event.

This event is supported by The Executive Office through the Together: Building a United Community (T:BUC) programme.
