Carrickfergus welcomes Irish Guards for 125th anniversary celebrations

Wednesday 20 August 2025

Mid and East Antrim will welcome the world-famous Irish Guards to Carrickfergus as they mark their 125th anniversary with a dazzling public parade and musical marching display on Thursday 4 September 2025.

Launching the event is Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor Jackson Minford, with representatives from the world-famous Irish Guards.

From 4pm to 5pm, the streets will come alive as the Irish Guards parade from Carrickfergus Town Hall to Castle Car Park, where they will perform against the striking backdrop of the historic Carrickfergus Castle.

Promising a celebration of pageantry and tradition, the Irish Guards, one of the most distinguished regiments in the British Army, are renowned for their ceremonial excellence in Central London, operational service and the distinctive St Patrick’s Blue plume worn in their bearskin headdress.

Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor Jackson Minford, said:

“I am delighted to welcome the Irish Guards to Carrickfergus for this milestone anniversary. Their visit is not just a celebration of 125 years of distinguished service but it’s a chance for our community to share in a moment of history. I know people of all ages, will be inspired by the pride, tradition and skill on display. I hope everyone will join us in giving them the warmest of Mid and East Antrim welcomes.”

Formed by order of Queen Victoria in 1900, the Irish Guards have served with distinction in conflicts across the world, including both World Wars, Iraq and Afghanistan. Known affectionately as the ‘the Micks’, they are part of the Household Division and take part in many of the UK’s most prestigious Royal and State occasions, including the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace and the King’s Birthday Parade.

Major Stephen McMichael Irish Guards 125 Project Officer said:

“Marking our 125th anniversary here in Carrickfergus is truly special. This historic town, with its stunning castle and centuries-long military connections, offers the perfect backdrop to share our story with the people of Northern Ireland. We look forward to marching alongside the support of the local community and expressing our heartfelt thanks for the friendship and encouragement shown to the Irish Guards through the years.”

This free public event is an opportunity for residents and visitors alike to enjoy a world-class display of music and military drill. The precision and flair of the Irish Guards Regimental Band and Pipe Band, alongside the Regimental Colour Party and full Ceremonial Guard of honour, with Irish Guards Wolfhound Mascot Seamus leading the parade, will make the occasion very special indeed and something not to be missed.

While admission is free, donations are warmly encouraged in support of the Irish Guards Charity (Registered Charity No. 1194198), which provides vital welfare and support to serving soldiers, veterans and their families. Contributions can be made online www.through the Irish Guards' Just Giving page.

Mid and East Antrim Borough Council invites everyone to come along and be part of this historic milestone in the heart of Carrickfergus. Early arrival is recommended to secure a good vantage point for the parade and musical performance.

The 125th anniversary celebrations will also see the Irish Guards participate in other commemorative events across Northern Ireland over the same weekend. In addition, The Irish Guards Association Ulster Branch will be in attendance at the event in Carrickfergus and at other events throughout the weekend.
