Friday 20 June 2025
Work on the upgrade and extension of Clough Cemetery is now complete providing an additional 276 plots and extending the life of the cemetery for at least another 50 years.

Upgrade work included laneway improvements and visibility splays at the road entrance, as well as newly surfaced car park.
Outgoing Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Alderman William McCaughey was joined by neighbouring landowners Ian and Tracy Hazlett and Brian Calwell for the official opening of the extension of Clough cemetery.
Clough Cemetery was first recorded as a religious site as far back as the 1300s with the ruins of an old church dating from the early 1600s. The church was in use right up until 1842 when St James’ Church of Ireland was built in the village.
With graves dating back to the 1700s, Clough Cemetery has been an important resting place for residents in the local area for centuries. The extension will continue to provide solace to those families who wish to keep their loved ones near.
Alderman William McCaughey thanked local landowners for their support; “This project has taken nearly ten years to complete, and it’s with thanks to Ian and Tracy Hazlett for permitting the Council to purchase a piece of their land and Brian Calwell for his support in facilitating the works across his land, that has enabled the completion of this project.
Alderman McCaughey continued; “Putting People First is a key part of Mid and East Antrim’s Community Plan and having our departed loved ones close to the place they called home is very important for all involved. Thank you to everyone who has made the completion of this project possible.”
Clough cemetery is now accepting burials in the new extension.
