Blooming best paintings and poems in the borough unveiled

The Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Borough Council, Councillor Lindsay ​Millar, has announced the winners and runners-up of the Mid and East Antrim In Bloom Young People’s Competitions – Painting, Poetry and Best School Gardening Project.

Cllr Millar said: “Well done everyone. The standard of entries was very high.

“We have received some wonderful paintings depicting blooms across the borough, including the famous Portglenone sunflowers and bluebells, Greenisland’s Knockagh Monument and Carrickfergus Castle. The poetry entries were wonderful, and the decisions were difficult to make.

“I am pleased to announce the winner of the Painting Competition (16 and under) is Hannah Grace Spence, age 11, from Gracehill. The runner-ups were Briony Robertson, age 11, from Portglenone and Jack Fleck, also aged 11, from Ballymena.

“The winner in the Painting Competition (10 and under) is Tristan McClean, age 10, from Whitehead. The runners-up were Tyrese Simms, age 9, from Carrickfergus and Caleb Clarke, age 3, from Larne.

“Lucas Bayram, age 9, from Ballymena, won the Poetry Competition with his poem entitled ‘Mid and East Antrim in Bloom’. Runners-up were Cameron Devlin, age 9, from Ahoghill, and Nikita Hartley, also age 9, from Carrickfergus, with her haiku poem.

“Carrickfergus Central Primary school are the winners in the Best School Gardening Project thanks to their focus on improving the school garden through biodiversity and recycling, and getting the whole school involved, as well as parents and grandparents the local community. 

“Two very worthy runners-up are Seaview Primary, Glenarm, who have been working extensively with local businesses to improve their school grounds, have built many nest boxes and are looking after their own hens, and PlayAway Islandmagee, who have been working with the local community group to learn all about bees and how to grow their own vegetables on site.”

All the ‘in bloom’ winners and runners-up will be invited to an awards ceremony which will be held on the 26 October 2018.
