Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Alderman Gerardine Mulvenna, hosted a special event in Larne last week to celebrate Irish Language Week 2024.

The event was packed full of music, dance and poetry – celebrating the rich history of Irish language in the Borough and beyond.

Guests enjoyed traditional music from Le Che’ile; poetry read in Irish by Michael Keown; Irish Dancing from the Kerr Academy of Irish Dance and ‘Forgotten Poetry: the O’Gnimh legacy in Larne’ presentation by Angeline Kelly – all providing a greater understanding and appreciation of the Irish language.

Speaking at the event the Mayor said: “I was delighted to host this wonderful event.  Irish language, music and culture is for everyone to engage with and enjoy and the talent showcased at the event was truly amazing!

Irish language Week, which runs from 1-17 March, is a key week in the calendar which aims to promote and celebrate the Irish Language, heritage and culture, and inspire others to become involved with the language.
