Performance improvements planned for Mid and East Antrim

Wednesday 17 June 2026

Mid and East Antrim Borough Council has launched its 2026/27 Performance Improvement Plan, outlining a series of priorities aimed at enhancing services, supporting communities and improving quality of life across the Borough.

The plan focuses on three Performance Improvement Objectives, developed following consultation with a range of stakeholders. Through a variety of initiatives, the Council aims to create safer and more attractive public spaces while supporting health, wellbeing and inclusion in a sustainable way.

Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Alderman Thomas Gordon, said the plan reflects the Council’s ongoing commitment to delivering high-quality services and positive outcomes for local people.

“Our vision is to be a strong, vibrant, safe and inclusive community, where people work together to improve the quality of life for all,” he said.

“The delivery of high-quality services for our residents is important, and we remain committed to improving how we work. Partnership working with our residents and other stakeholders will support planned improvements that enhance the quality of life and environment for our ratepayers and communities.

“Alongside the Mid and East Antrim Community Plan and our own Corporate Plan, this annual Performance Improvement Plan enables us to deliver the best outcomes for our residents, communities, businesses and visitors. The progression of our City Deal projects will also strengthen tourism assets and grow our economic potential.”

A major project included with the plan is the introduction of a single dry recycling model across the Borough, which will begin this year. The initiative aims to improve recycling services and support environmental sustainability.

The Council will also invest in enhancing public spaces and recreational facilities. Planned projects include: the reopening of the revitalised Carnfunnock Park, the design of two civic spaces in Ballymena town centre, and the continued development of accessible, inclusive play parks and outdoor recreational spaces.

Residents of Mid and East Antrim can play their part in creating clean, attractive and safe spaces. From recycling at home to not leaving litter behind and taking part in a local clean-up, they can help keep the Borough beautiful. Those who are familiar with the needs of disabled people can work with the Council to reduce any barriers they may face to its services.

Supporting town centres and local businesses is still a priority. Recognising the challenges facing high streets, the Council will continue to deliver initiatives designed to increase footfall, encourage local spending and enhance town centre vitality.

The Performance Improvement Plan forms part of the Council’s wider commitment to continuous improvement and ensuring Mid and East Antrim remains a thriving place to live, work and visit.
