Brown’s Bay Beach

Photograph of Brown's Bay on a sunny day

Brown’s Bay beach is located at the northern tip of Islandmagee. This sandy beach has changed very little over the years.  It sits in a 600m wide horse-shoe shaped bay. Access is via a set of  steps at one end and a gentle ramp at the other. A sizeable car park and toilet facility are on the other side of the road and not far from here is a small shop with limited opening hours. There is a wide grassy area that is suitable for a wheelchair to sit. Earl’s Café, is 4km away at Mullaghboy near Portmuck.

The caravan park was closed in 2014 and the future of the site is still under discussion.

By road from Larne the distance to Brown’s Bay is 23km and from Belfast it is 40km. However, as the crow flies it is only 500m across the sea at the mouth of Larne Lough and then 2km by road/footway from Ballylumford Harbour.

There are public toilets at Ballylumford Harbour.

This beach has been awarded the Seaside Award for achieving the required standard of bathing water quality and for its general cleanliness and provision of information and facilities.  Go to the NI Direct website to find the water quality results that this beach has achieved this season.
